Drywall Finish Levels Explained

Not every wall needs the same treatment. The right finish level depends on lighting, paint type, and how the space will be used.

Level 0 finish example

Level 0: No Finishing

Drywall is hung but joints and fasteners are left untreated. Used only in temporary construction or areas completely concealed above ceilings where no finishing is needed.

Best for:
  • Temporary construction barriers
  • Concealed plenum areas
  • Fire-rated assemblies (where code allows)
Level 1 finish example

Level 1: Fire Tape

Joints and interior angles have tape embedded in joint compound. Surface does not need to be free of excess compound, tool marks, or ridges. Minimal finishing for smoke and fire barriers.

Best for:
  • Above-ceiling areas in garages
  • Service corridors and utility rooms
  • Attic spaces and mechanical rooms
Level 2 finish example

Level 2: One Coat

Joints taped with one coat of compound over tape, angles, and fastener heads. Surface is smooth enough for tile substrate or heavy texture but not for painting.

Best for:
  • Garage interiors
  • Behind tile or stone installations
  • Warehouse and storage spaces
Level 3 finish example

Level 3: Two Coats

Two coats of compound on joints and one on fasteners. Suitable for medium to heavy textures where the wall surface won't be directly visible under smooth paint.

Best for:
  • Walls receiving heavy spray texture
  • Stipple or knockdown finishes
  • Areas with textured wallcovering
Level 4 finish example

Level 4: Smooth Finish

Three coats of compound on joints, two on fasteners, sanded smooth. The standard for most residential and commercial spaces. Excellent under flat or eggshell paint in normal lighting.

Best for:
  • Living rooms and bedrooms
  • Offices and commercial spaces
  • Anywhere with flat or eggshell paint
Level 5 finish example

Level 5: Skim Coat

Full skim coat over the entire surface after Level 4 is complete. Eliminates any possibility of joint photographing or flashing. The highest quality finish achievable.

Best for:
  • High-gloss and semi-gloss paint
  • Critical lighting (skylights, large windows)
  • Feature walls and premium residential
